Cancer Rehabilitation and Lymphedema Management

Physical therapy is a valuable resource for individuals facing cancer treatment. The effects of cancer and its treatments, such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, can lead to a range of physical challenges, including pain, fatigue, weakness, and reduced mobility. Physical therapists specialize in addressing these issues and can provide tailored rehabilitation and support.

Physical therapy plays a crucial role in the management and treatment of lymphedema, a condition characterized by swelling, often in the arms or legs, due to a compromised lymphatic system and/or removal of lymph nodes. Through specialized techniques, such as manual lymphatic drainage, compression therapy, and tailored exercises, physical therapists can reduce swelling, improve circulation, and enhance lymphatic flow. These interventions not only alleviate discomfort but also help prevent complications associated with untreated lymphedema, such as infections and decreased mobility.

Injury Rehabilitation

Orthopedic physical therapy focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries. During an evaluation, a skilled physical therapist will conduct a thorough examination to identify the underlying issues causing pain, limited mobility, or dysfunction. This assessment may involve assessing posture, joint range of motion, strength, flexibility, and functional movements.

Once a diagnosis is made, the physical therapist will develop a personalized treatment plan. Treatment typically includes a combination of manual therapy techniques, therapeutic exercises, and modalities to address pain, improve joint and muscle function, and enhance overall physical performance. The goal of orthopedic physical therapy is to promote healing, restore function, prevent future injuries, and empower patients to live active, pain-free lives.

Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation

Physical therapy offers effective, non-invasive solutions for individuals of all genders dealing with pelvic floor dysfunction. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that support vital functions, including bowel, bladder, and sexual health. When these muscles are weakened or dysfunctional, it can lead to issues such as urinary or bowel leakage, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, and sexual dysfunction.

A skilled pelvic floor physical therapist can provide a personalized assessment and treatment plan. This may include exercises to strengthen or relax specific pelvic floor muscles, manual therapy to release tension, biofeedback techniques, and education on lifestyle modifications. By addressing pelvic floor dysfunction through physical therapy, individuals can often achieve significant improvements in their symptoms and regain control.
